Techstars explained: terms, city programmes and applications
By GrantSnap team · Published 2026-10-31 · guide
Techstars' accelerators page, captured 31 October 2026.
Techstars is a three-month accelerator programme that, according to its own pages, invests in early-stage companies in return for equity, and it runs as a set of separate city and partner programmes rather than one single batch. For most programmes, Techstars states that it offers $220,000, made up of a $200,000 uncapped MFN SAFE and a $20,000 convertible equity agreement, and that it takes a minimum of 5% of the company plus whatever the SAFE converts into. Joining has no monetary cost.
This guide covers the published terms, how city and partner programmes differ, what the application involves and where Techstars is silent. The deal terms come from Techstars' own investment terms page. The dates are as of 31 October 2026, so confirm them on the official programme pages before you plan around them.
Who it is for
Techstars describes its accelerators as programmes for early-stage startups. Its help centre says a company is not too early to apply and that it has accepted teams with no more than an idea. It also says companies eventually need to form a c-corporation in the US or a similar entity in their home country.
The fit depends on the programme. Techstars Chicago says all ambitious founders are welcome to apply. Techstars Boston says it is industry agnostic but focuses on AI and machine learning, robotics, healthtech, tech bio and critical infrastructure. Techstars AI Health Baltimore targets AI-driven health startups. If you are choosing between accelerators, read the focus line on the specific programme page first, because a general application to the wrong vertical wastes a cycle.
The investment terms as published
The Techstars investment terms page, announced on 17 April 2025, sets out the standard deal. The total is $220,000, split into two parts. The first is $200,000 through an uncapped MFN SAFE. The second is $20,000 through a post-money convertible equity agreement, which converts into 5% of the company on a post-money basis, including the existing option pool.
Both instruments convert when the company closes a priced round of at least $1 million. The MFN SAFE has no valuation cap. Instead, it takes the most favourable terms of any SAFE you issue between its start date and the priced round. Techstars gives an example of a later SAFE with a 20% discount or an $8,000,000 cap, which would give Techstars those terms too. The page states that Techstars receives a minimum of 5%, plus whatever the MFN SAFE converts into. Its worked example is that at a $20 million pre-money next round, the $200,000 SAFE converts into 1% additional ownership.
Techstars also uses a side letter. It covers pro rata, digital asset and drag-along rights, and it requires you to share key operating metrics. Before investing, Techstars runs checks on background, incorporation, ownership, IP and the company bank account, and the $20,000 is wired once those clear. The page says Asia-Pacific programmes offer a $100,000 uncapped MFN SAFE instead. The Techstars New York City page repeats the $220,000 structure. The Baltimore page says $220,000 per company. The Boston, Chicago, Anywhere and Northwestern Medicine pages do not restate the terms, so rely on the investment terms page for those.
Length and format
Techstars' programme pages describe three months of intensive, mentorship-driven support, and its help centre calls the programme 90 days. Format varies by programme. The New York City page describes a hybrid model, with in-person sessions in the first two weeks, one in-person week at the midpoint and Demo Day at the end. The Anywhere page describes a remote-first programme with no relocation, three in-person offsites and a focus on companies in North American time zones.
Techstars also says senior management should be present and engaged for the majority of the 90-day programme and should put most of their working time into the concepts in the application. The New York City page says part-time applicants are allowed but accepted founders must commit full exclusivity to the startup.
For the current cycle, the pages we checked list the same calendar. Applications opened on 24 August 2026, the final deadline is 18 November 2026, the accelerator starts on 8 March 2027 and Demo Day is on 3 June 2027. Techstars Chicago also says selected companies get dedicated downtown office space for up to a year.
City and partner programmes
The Techstars accelerators page lists 16 programmes at the time of writing. Some are named for a city, such as Boston, Chicago, New York City, London and Tokyo. Others carry a partner name, such as Northwestern Medicine, the Ohio State University in Columbus, USC and ABN AMRO. The page does not formally classify them as city or partner programmes, so treat that split as our reading of the names.
The partner programmes tend to be tied to a sector and to the partner's own network. Northwestern Medicine & Techstars Healthcare says founders work with Northwestern Medicine teams inside the Mansueto Innovation Institute. Techstars AI Health Baltimore names Johns Hopkins, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield and MedStar Health among its anchor collaborators and promises access to real clinical environments. The headline deal terms are the same standard package, but the mentors, partners and focus differ, so choose by who you want in the room.
What the application asks and how selection works
Techstars does not publish the full question list on its public pages. The apply page at apply.techstars.com loads as an application portal, and the help centre points to an application preview resource and a video that explains the process. Read the preview for your programme before you start.
What the help centre does say is useful. A team video and a product demo are not required, but both are described as highly recommended, and applications without a team video may be screened out. Co-founders who live in different places are covered by a separate help article, so a split team is not a reason to skip the video.
On selection, Techstars says it weighs team most heavily, in the order team, team, team, market, progress, idea. It suggests strengthening an application by covering business and technical skills in the founding team, showing progress on a prototype or product, showing deliberate thinking and concrete steps, and giving early traction or data. Techstars does not publish the number of interview rounds or how long the decision takes on the pages we checked, so we have left those out.
Costs, obligations and mentors
The investment terms page states that joining a Techstars accelerator has no monetary cost. The price is equity and the obligations in the side letter. Companies must be US corporations or foreign equivalents, or holding companies, and those incorporated in non-approved countries must complete a reorganisation first. If you are not yet incorporated, plan that step before an offer arrives.
On mentors, the New York City page says mentors are matched after the class is finalised so that advisors suit each company. The help centre adds that mentors help selected companies but do not take part in selection. It describes a typical day as built around the product, with mentor chats, masterclasses, office hours and pitch practice. The programme ends with Demo Day, which Techstars describes as exposure to investors. The New York City page also lists access to more than $2 million in partner perks.
Common mistakes
The first is emailing mentors after you apply. Techstars says this will hurt you more than it will help you, because mentors do not choose the class. Put the time into the application.
The second is leaving out the team video, given the warning that applications without one may be screened out. The third is applying to a vertical programme that does not match your product. The fourth is ignoring structure. Techstars checks incorporation and ownership before investing, so unclear cap tables or an unsuitable entity can slow an offer.
The fifth is misreading the terms. The $20,000 and the $200,000 are separate instruments, and the 5% is a minimum before the SAFE converts. Model your own dilution at your next round before you accept, and ask a lawyer to read the side letter.
Open now and what to do next
As of 31 October 2026, six Techstars programmes are open in GrantSnap's catalog with a recorded deadline of 18 November 2026: Techstars Boston, Techstars Chicago, Techstars New York City, Northwestern Medicine & Techstars Healthcare, Techstars Anywhere and Techstars AI Health Baltimore. Pick the one whose focus and format match your company, read its page and the application preview, then prepare your team video and your traction numbers.
GrantSnap tracks live calls like these, drafts answers from your profile and fills the form in Chrome. You review every answer before you submit. Whatever you use, check the deadline and terms on the official Techstars pages first.
